Even though the country of Peru’s gross domestic product has more than doubled since 2000, about half the population remains in dire poverty. Sister Nelida Naveros reached out to the poor in her native Peru when she was growing up. Now she’s a Sister of Divine Providence teaching at La Roche College in Pittsburgh. And she continues reaching out. Sister Nelida’s story is part of Standup Sisters, a live event where sisters share their stories of service. This episode presents the St. Catherine University event Moving Forward Together: Breaking the Impasse VIII. Held on February 22nd, 2017; the evening presented policy, poetry, and creative solutions from Sr. Simone Campbell and Courtney Martin as they explored ways in which we can strengthen our communities to move beyond a politics of divisiveness. Sr. Simone focused on legislation that will mend the gaps and benefits the 100%. Courtney Martin insisted that real love for our nation calls us to look at ourselves, as citizens, and our great potential to shape it moving forward together. Mission: Leading to Influence

For #NCSW2017 Rocky Pierson worked with Pa Ying Vang to create an audio documentary about mission. The documentary discusses the connection between women religious and the new mission being carried out in partnership with lay associates and volunteers. Since the structural changes of Vatican II, many religious communities have gone through changes that place women religious in their local, national, and international communities standing up for social justice causes. As the number of women US religious decreases their programs do not, and this is due to the combined efforts of women religious and the lay people who associate themselves with and work with them. In this documentary, Rocky and Pa Ying will point to sisters and religious communities who have had missions centered around social justice, the new missions that have been influenced by their past efforts, and how they are supporting these efforts into the future.

Sister Mary Mark Mahoney, CSJ was one of our Oral History participants; interviewed by Jennifer Parlin at age 103. Since then Sister Mary Mark has been talked about and her story shared by many different SisterStory podcasts. On January 11th, 2017, on her 106th birthday, Sr Mary Mark Mahoney, CSJ passed away.
